This is an illustrative deployment scenario. It is not a case study, describes no named customer, and contains no results, dates or measurements. The situation

A front end that is fine on Tuesday and broken on Saturday

The queue is not a staffing problem all week. It is a staffing problem for a few hours of it.

Staffed lanes are adequate for most of the trading week and overwhelmed at the weekend peak, in the evening and through festival sales. Shoppers with a basket of a few items wait behind trolleys, and the store cannot justify permanent staff for hours that occur twice a week. Meanwhile the service desk queue for returns and exchanges takes the same associates away from the tills.

There is a technical problem underneath the operational one. The lanes depend on a live link to head office for prices and promotions, so a link failure at the peak stops trading altogether, and a price changed centrally at noon may or may not have reached every till by the evening.

Scan, or look up what has no barcode

Barcodes and QR codes are scanned from a fixed or handheld reader, and loose produce is weighed and selected by look-up code with a picture, so the shopper is never stuck with an unscannable item and no way forward.

Validate the bag without nagging

An integrated scale checks that what went into the bag matches what was scanned, with tolerances set so that a light item or a shopper's own bag does not trigger an intervention on every transaction. Nuisance alerts are what make shoppers abandon a lane.

Stop cleanly on restricted items

Alcohol, tobacco and pharmacy lines pause the transaction and raise an attendant alert that cannot be skipped, the attendant approves at the lane, and the intervention is recorded for the compliance review.

Apply loyalty and coupons before the total

A loyalty card or a coupon code is scanned before payment, points and promotions are applied to the basket, and the shopper sees the effect on the total rather than discovering it on the receipt.

Pay by whatever is available right now

Card, UPI QR, wallet and cash where the lane has an acceptor. If the link is down, the payment screen says which methods are unavailable at that moment instead of timing out after the shopper has chosen one.

Print a receipt that satisfies tax rules

The lane holds the HSN code and tax rate per item from the item master, so the printed receipt carries the tax breakdown a GST invoice requires rather than a single total.

For the shopper with a basket, the peak stops being a reason to leave. For the shopper with a trolley, the staffed lane moves faster because the baskets have gone elsewhere. Nothing here depends on the shopper preferring a machine; it depends on giving a short transaction a short route.

For the associate, the role shifts from operating a till to supervising several lanes and resolving the cases the software escalates: an age check, a weight mismatch, an item that will not scan. That is a different skill and it needs training, which is why a pilot lane runs beside a staffed one before any rollout.

For the store, the important change is that the front end no longer stops when the head-office link does. Prices and promotions are cached on the lane, cash lanes keep trading, and completed transactions post to the POS exactly once when the link returns, so the day's sales report reconciles.
